October in Lima: the most revered religious icon for Peruvians, the Lord of the Miracles, a black Christ image takes to the old streets of the city centre followed by thousands of catholic believers in a massive demonstration of faith.
The icon is a unique Peruvian image of a black Jesus Christ nailed to a cross. It is thought to have been painted on a wall by a freed slave from Africa during the colonial era in the mid-17th Century. It is also said to have survived a major earthquake which destroyed the chapel that housed it in 1687.
